What to watch out for when buying a cell
phone Charger?
- Cell phone chargers come in a broad range of
prices and quality. It is interesting that some cell
phone owners will take a phone worth hundreds of dollars and then
charge it with a cheap, poor quality charger. The results of
this can be expensive as almost all manufacturer warranties are
voided if a cell phone is damaged using an aftermarket charger.
As a result, you should always make sure any charger you buy
protects you and your phone and is authentic in the case of OEM
units.
Warranty - A good quality aftermarket charger
should come with at least a 1 year warranty. You should also
make sure the company who manufactured the charger guarantees it
will not damage your phone with a promise of replacement of the
phone if it is damaged. There are hundreds of inexpensive,
very poor quality chargers on the market with no protection to the
user in the event of damage. We only sell chargers from
companies that have a proven track record of quality and support for
their items. If you are purchasing an OEM charger and the
store requires return of the cell phone charger to them if defective, it is
unlikely it is an authentic OEM item. These types of cell phone chargers
can be the most dangerous to use with your phone.
Location of the company selling the Charger.
In the last year or so a number of companies out of Hong Kong have
started offering product on the internet shipped direct from China.
This can often be determined by looking at the companies return
policy and address. If a charger from a company based overseas
damages your phone, it is unlikely you will have any protection.
When you see OEM items on these websites, they are almost always
counterfeit OEM items.
Warranty and return policy. Anytime a company
requires you to return a OEM cell phone charger to them versus the
manufacturer a red flag should go up. This is almost always a
good indication the cell phone Charger is not authentic.
All too often we hear stories of people saving a couple of dollars
on a poor quality charger bought from a different retailer only to
have it damage their phone. Don't chance your expensive phone
with a cheap charger with no guarantees.

Keeping your phone powered up with the right charger
is important. No one wants to be stuck with a dead battery when
they need to use their cell phone. Having a charger available and
ready to use when your phone needs it can be a lifesaver.
So what kind of Charger should you purchase? A number of
considerations should go into the type of cell phone charger that will
best suit your needs as well as some strong cautions regarding some
chargers currently on the market.
What types of cell phone Chargers are there?
- Standard Chargers - Standard
cell phone chargers generally require 4-6 hours to fully charge a
battery. These types of chargers are commonly referred to as
overnight chargers.
- Rapid Chargers -
Rapid cell phone chargers should fully charge a battery within 1-2 hours.
A rapid charger requires technology that reduces the charge rate to
a trickle once the battery has reached around 90 percent of capacity
to keep from damaging the battery.
- Travel Chargers -
Travel chargers are commonly included in the box with a new phone.
These types of chargers plug into an AC electrical outlet.
Some cell phone travel chargers have folding blades allowing the
charger to be packed in luggage without fear of damage due to the
protruding blades.
- Car Chargers - Car chargers
(also referred to as vehicle chargers or cig chargers) plug into the
DC outlet in a car, boat, truck or other type of vehicle. Car
chargers come in a variety of designs and generally have coiled
cords ranging from 6 to 12 feet in length.
- Desktop Chargers - Desktop
cell phone chargers are a base unit that sits on a desk, counter, etc. and
plugs into the wall using a travel charger. The base may hold
only the phone, only a battery, or both the phone and battery.
Generally any case on the phone will have to be removed for the
phone to fit in these types of chargers.
- Wall Battery Chargers - Wall
chargers are a battery only charger that the battery is snapped into
and then the unit is plugged into the wall. These types of
chargers do not attach to the phone at all and will only charge a
battery that is not in the phone.
- All-in-One Chargers - All in one
cell phone chargers such as the DoubleTalk are are combo travel and car
charger. These types of chargers are very convenient when
traveling as you can carry one unit for both applications.
These are almost always rapid cell phone chargers.
What do terms like IC Chip and OEM mean?
- IC Chip - Any good charger
will have overcharge protection embedded in the form of an IC Chip
or similar technology. This protects the phone and battery
from damage due to overcharging or overheating. A charger
without overcharge protection should never be used.
- OEM - OEM (original equipment
manufacturer) cell phone chargers are made by the company that makes
your cell phone. For instance, a Motorola brand charger is the
OEM charger for Motorola phones. Some phone manufacturers will
not honor the phones warranty if you use a charger other than the
OEM unit and the phone or battery is damaged.
